notable quotes.
I am the absolute and founding king. The King of Heroes, Gilgamesh. Therefore, you too shall call me thus.
❋ ❋ ❋
I will obey the gods and respect them. However, be destroyed. On the occasion that you brought me forth, you lost your positions by your own actions.
❋ ❋ ❋
You are not worthy to gaze upon me. A worm should just continue staring at the ground as it dies.
❋ ❋ ❋
Everything of value in this world belongs to me. No matter how precious a treasure this Grail of yours may be, I won't let some mongrel have it without my permission.
❋ ❋ ❋
May your scattered remnants entertain me, mongrel.
❋ ❋ ❋
A carefully sculpted war with no betrayal, no artifice, no fruitless exertions, that does not suit my tastes.
❋ ❋ ❋
I've had no lack of liaisons. Well, nothing I could tell to the populace, though. But that, too, grew dull. It's what they call too much of a good thing. It's not something to call a triumph.
❋ ❋ ❋
Betrayal is when you plan to walk the same path with another but then stab them in the back. If your paths are different from the beginning, you will inevitably devour one another.
❋ ❋ ❋
Honor lies not in obedience. It is something to exemplify. Once you've devoted yourself to the sword and become your master's blade, who will measure your Master's righteousness? You cannot weigh the beliefs of others whe you have renounced your scales.
❋ ❋ ❋
When I exercise my true power, all I need is my body and the key to my treasury.
❋ ❋ ❋
I will only kill someone personally if their soul offends me with its ugliness, or if they themselves attack me. [...] I do not simply kill, understand?
❋ ❋ ❋
On the chess board, the future is not something to be read. It is to be gazed down upon and overseen. The right move is always visible.
❋ ❋ ❋
Endowing a weapon with a human heart will bring it nothing but suffering.
❋ ❋ ❋
If a tyrant is one who rules through brutality, then I am indisputably a tyrant. After all, I was created as such.
❋ ❋ ❋
My path of kingship is simple. I acquire treasures which catch my interest, and protect them. I completely annihilate all that gets in the way of my pleasures. That is all. Regard me as a demon or a tempest if you must. In any case, my mother was a goddess. Isn't it only natural that I should be inhuman?
❋ ❋ ❋
Were I incarnated to any extent, with blood that runs like a human's, my nature might tend toward the human nature of the era in question.
❋ ❋ ❋
Love is not a beautiful thing. It is ugly, and inconsistent, and brings pain. Which is why that which is born from love becomes a light that can never be replaced. How can beauty born from beauty alone have any truth to it?
❋ ❋ ❋
At the root of all life lies battle. There are victims and perpetrators in everything.
❋ ❋ ❋
You're fretting over pointless things. Whether you were a good person or a bad person will not change the fact that you are a mongrel.
❋ ❋ ❋
An emperor? Don't group me with such lowlifes. I am the king. The first story, humanity's oldest. Hm... however. Emperor of the night. It rings with unconcealed obscenity. All right, it pleases me.
❋ ❋ ❋
That posture is humanity's oldest cry for help. Those who that that stance have a magic art that calls out even to complete strangers. Though, personally, I couldn't care less.
❋ ❋ ❋
How can I leave a fool who put her life at stake for me to her own devices any longer! Desiring me for her own sake, she displays her own legitimacy without hesitation. It is my duty to love such shameless wishes, such brazen purity of heart. If I do not save such a wretched human being as this, then who will!
❋ ❋ ❋
I told you before that this was your battle, but forget that. Your enemy is my enemy. I will assist you, nameless Master. From now on, I will become your sword.
❋ ❋ ❋
What displeases me? Any lifeform that does not challenge its own boundaries wearies me. Such is the difference between a man and a beast.

information.
As the oldest hero and the prototype of all myth, Gilgamesh is given many titles. His most commonly quoted is simply, "King of Heroes" - a term of respect given to him as the first admitted to the Throne of Heroes, and as the strongest of all Heroic Spirits. However, he is also known as Adjudicator, the Golden Tyrant and as the Keystone or Linchpin that connects Humanity and the Divine.
That last title is especially notable. 5,000 years ago, or roundabout, Gilgamesh was designed by the Gods and birthed from the union of the divine Ninsun, a goddess of prophecy and daughter to the king of gods, and Lugalbanda, the king of Uruk. He was created as consummate being - physically perfect in both strength and beauty, and possessing infinite wisdom and intellect. He was also 2/3rds God and 1/3rd human, despite having one parent of each side. As the Gods were, at that time, aware of the slow death of the Age of Gods, his role, or rather the role intended for him, was that of the lynchpin that would bind humanity into the service of the Gods for all time.
However, they miscalculated: Gilgamesh was born with the indomitable ego and strength of a god, but his allegiance was not with them. Rather, he declared himself independent, stating that while he would respect and obey them, he would also allow them to sink into irrelevance and decay. He stayed with Uruk, therefore, not because it was his destiny or his birthright as the son of Lugalbanda, but rather because he was fond of Uruk and found shepherding them to be a task worth doing.
As Gilgamesh grew, so his power and his will.... as did his fondness for mankind. As such, he embraced his role as shepherd, though for a very different purpose than he was intended to: instead of binding them to the gods, he instead dedicated himself to guiding them to themselves. He would watch them grow and thrive and mature as a species until they outgrew Earth itself and took to the stars. However, while he recognized that the disparities in human nature formed the strength of the species, he also believed that the chaos inherent to a race of individuals could ultimately hold them back. Therefore, he determined that humanity required an absolute standard as well as a guide, and he forged himself into that standard and so embraced his role as King of Humanity and of the Earth. However, this set him apart from the humanity he loved, and so his connection to them lessened. Further isolated by his possession of higher vision - an ability to perceive the bigger picture in a way beyond that of even the gods themselves - and by his immense strength, Gilgamesh was not understood by his people, or by his family in the Heavens. Even so, he maintained his determination and dedication to the mission he had been given, and then recast in his own image: that of King, judge, and Shepherd.
It was in recreating himself that he became as he is known: a man of ego and without much compassion. In short, a tyrant. This remains his nature to a large degree. Perhaps it's unsurprising, given his lofty position, that he considers himself to above all others, his word unquestioned and his authority over the world (Earth) absolute. He lives by what became the Code of Ur-Nammu - standards and principles without room for circumstance or consideration.
Indeed, he shows little in the way of humanity - of connection or compassion. He thinks nothing of judging an entire generation as too degenerate to live and calling for the virtual genocide of the species. While this is cruel, or even "evil" by most standards, to Gilgamesh this is a matter of practicality; as he is the tender of the garden, he must not hesitate to cut rotten blooms or pull up weeds to further the health and well-being of the garden, or the bush. He thinks, therefore, not of the well-being of this person in front of him, or even this city or this generation of humans - rather, his eyes look farther, to what must be done to create a better outcome in 100 years, 1,000 years, and more. If his actions leave him as a villain in the eyes of the weak who die, what difference does it make? If his reputation is soiled for a century, does it matter? A century is only 1/50th of his existence, after all, and anyway, what does it matter what people think of him when it is the King who judges them, and not the other way around?
Gilgamesh is, therefore, a man who views himself as outside the system - or rather, he is the system. A law is a law only because he acknowledges it, and he submits to no authority higher than himself. To him, a human is not something to love or value, himself, but rather "things that are about to die." As such they are transient and their lives not to be considered on an individual level, although he does not deny that they may deserve love, or be beautiful existences. Furthermore, since he is a believer in meritocracies and extinguishing laziness and sloth, he acknowledges the value only of those who contribute and are therefore of "worth." If someone can disappear without their existence sending out a ripple, then this is a person who does not deserve to live as he considers them no more than a living ghost, and a parasite.
It can be considered rare to possess such a strong sense of self and purpose that one is able to maintain commitment to a principle that isolates them from all that they value. Therefore, it can't be surprising that Gilgamesh is considered to have an unparalleled will and mind - he is referred to as an Absolute Controller, an indomitable will that cannot be marred, corrupted, altered or controlled through any means, regardless of the power behind such an attempt.
As the King, Gilgamesh is extremely possessive about anything he considers to be his, including all things on Earth as well as some things beyond it (in Zero, he refers to the universe itself as his garden, but usually he limits his domain to Earth). He has an extraordinary sense of entitlement and since he considers all things on or of Earth to be his things, he thinks nothing of simply inviting himself into someone's collection of wines, for example, or just using their things. Speaking of which, anything unique and fine he will seek to add to his collection - though he admits that collecting objects is more an instinct and a matter of second nature than it is of pleasure.
It must be understood, though, that a great deal of Gilgamesh's infamous ego and superiority complex is rooted in reality: he is not some 20-something rich kid who thinks they're hot stuff because they went to an Ivy League school. He is a 5,000 year old King created as a perfect and all-powerful presence and set up by the gods as the ruler of Earth and man. He is the keeper of human knowledge, and blessed with a knowledge of "all things." And much of his attitude stems from his age in general -- in his time, one simply did not look at, speak to, or touch the king without permission, and he carries this attitude with him in part because, as a Heroic Spirit, he is resistant to change. That said, he is more dynamic and adjustable than most, and in fact when incarnated into a physical form his human side adjusts to the spirit of humanity in whatever world or era he is brought into, which may make him more or less tolerable depending on the climate of the age. Furthermore, his personality changes based on his mood, which is heavily influenced by how much he likes the environment and the company around him.
His background also explains another thing: Gilgamesh has a great love of luxury, but also a great love of tumult and struggle. Any era in which survival is a struggle, in which people must rely on their wits and strength to live or advance, will please him infinitely more than a world in which there is rampant laziness or unearned luxury. Even as a King he was highly active, e.g. he destroyed Humbaba, a divine beast that threatened the prosperity of man, he went on adventures, he challenged the Gods themselves. In Fate/Zero and Stay Night, he is less active because he finds the world uninspiring, and his desire to awaken Angra Mainyu and wipe out most of the world stems from his dissatisfaction with the complacency and ease of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Gilgamesh is dedicated to treating both "good" and "evil" as equal concepts, though he himself is "good" by word of god. Among other things, this allows him to indulge any person who interests him a great deal, as is seen in his interactions with Kirei Kotomine, and with his willingness to accompany Hakuno Kishinami, whose will to live impressed him. As Gilgamesh is unmoved by the ideals and tastes of others, he will assist in goals that are both destructive and constructive if the seeker of that goal has sparked him - he is interested in the story of "that person" and wishes to see how the story develops, rather than having an investment in any particular outcome. That said... Gilgamesh is also admittedly quite sadistic at times, and admits that what stirs his heart is the sound of a heart breaking. He is also drawn very strongly to people who remind him of his lost friend, Enkidu, or of people are isolated by their own nature, as he is. In any case he will always encourage a person to discover and embrace their true self, whether that self is "good" or "evil," and to find the source of their pleasure - even if their pleasure lies in the pain of others.
Indeed, Gilgamesh's own vice is hedonism - the tendency to indulge himself in pleasure, though that pleasure can certainly take many forms. And he does have a limit - for example, while he admits to having been extremely sexually active in the past, he also says it grew boring as it was too much of a good thing. These days, he can more often be found indulging in spiritual, rather than physical, seduction.
His greatest weakness, ironically, stems from the very same strength that defines his greatness: his power and ego can blind him to the danger posed by others, and he has been known to sabotage himself by failing to take a threat seriously until far too late. This is not, however, absolute: at times he uses his full strength just on a whim, and he isn't stupid enough to repeat a mistake against the same foe twice.
Finally, during the earlier parts of his mortal years, Gilgamesh had a companion, lover and consort called Enkidu - a shapechanging magical construct created by the Gods to humble him who, instead, chose to become his companion. They were together for an unknown time before the Gods struck Enkidu down as punishment for some of their various acts of hubris.
At the time of Enkidu's death, Gilgamesh swore never to have a true friend or companion again, in order to preserve Enkidu's worth within his heart - a worth that is unchanging through infinite time. As such, when he meets someone he is drawn to, he is unable to either let them go (due to his jealousy/possessiveness) or let them close to him (due to his vow). Therefore, in lieu of forming true connections, he's developed a nasty tendency to possess and then emotionally destroy those people, ruining them such that they can no longer be wanted by anyone, including him... and themselves.
This has made him a most unfortunate person to draw the attention of, to say the least.
Gilgamesh admits that his personality is rather inhuman, stating that this is natural, as his mother was a goddess.
 powers.
❋SERVANT BASICS There is a certain set of basic abilities possessed by all Servants in varying degrees as follows:
- FORMING CONTRACTS provides a Master with three Command spells, which can then be used to impose their will on Gilgamesh as many times as there are spells. In return, Gilgamesh's basic abilities are altered somewhat to reflect the strength of the Master. Due to Gilgamesh's unique combination of a Grail-provided body, extremely high Independent Action and a prana reserve described as the equivalent of 100,000 souls, Gilgamesh doesn't actually require a Master. However, he can still form a contract if it suits him.
- SUPERHUMAN PHYSICAL ABILITIES are universal to all Servants - this includes superhuman strength, speed, durability and healing powers. Gilgamesh is considered a physical match for the majority of the most physically powerful Servants such as Arturia, but falls below Hercules in his Berserker form (and probably in his original form, for that matter). That said, this varies somewhat according to the Master, as well as whether he's been consuming prana sources elsewhere.
- DEMATERIALIZATION/TELEPORTATION returns a Servant to their spiritual form where they can recover from wounds and conserve energy. They can speak but cannot affect or be affected by the world in this state. They can materialize elsewhere, but the distance is somewhat limited by how much prana they wish to expend.
- CROSSOVER KNOWLEDGE is an unreliable and vague ability to connect images and feelings with experiences or people encountered by other iterations of a Servant's core self. For example, Gilgamesh shows a vague affinity for the name King of Knights even in Extra. The strength of the recollections seems random - he remembers Shinji Matou's name but only a vague sense of Arturia's appearance. His truest form - that is, the core Heroic Spirit Gilgamesh - has access to all knowledge from all iterations of him, though it feels distanced like watching a movie or reading a book.
- MAGIC RESISTANCE can nullify lesser magic and mitigate the effects of greater magic. This is another stat that varies by Master.
❋PERSONAL ABILITIES Somewhat divorced from his Servant abilities, Gilgamesh is a demigod, or rather a man whose blood is 2/3rds divine and 1/3rd mortal. This provides him with a number of other abilities as well, though his strength is somewhat suppressed by his rejection of his own bloodline. Gilgamesh's personal abilities are as follows:
- GOLDEN RULE attracts money and luxury into his life such that he will never know poverty or be forced to work.
- EXTRAORDINARY LUCK represents a charmed fate which, at his level actually bends fate to create more fortuitous outcomes. (this doesn't mean nothing bad will ever happen to him, though, just... not as often.) It allows him to do things like dodge attacks that are specifically impossible to dodge, e.g. Gae Bolg.
- DIVINITY is a result of his heritage and allows him to ignore the majority of faith-based protections or attacks (e.g. spells cast in the name of a god) by overwhelming them with the force of his own divinity. His divine aura lends an air of unsurpassed power to his presence and can cause electronics to act up or short circuit and roll back flames.
- INSIGHT TO MAGIC permits him to identify magic in use or preparation, e.g. he can tell what spells are being used and for what and how many, either as they're being prepared or once they're already in use.
- INDOMITABLE EGO represents Gilgamesh's will, which is unparalleled within his canon. In the words of the author, Gilgamesh simply cannot be controlled - his will is so strong that even the virtually limitless power of the corrupted holy grail can't control or change him.
- PRECOGNITION allows him to foresee the future. Often it manifests through prophetic dreams, though rather metaphorical and cryptic ones. At other times, it is a fairly clear vision of possible or definite futures. This ability is not definitive or reliable, and can be even less so when he's in an Archer container. However, it's still there.
- CLAIRVOYANCE allows him to see into parallel universes and worlds. Generally this ability is nerfed by the Grail itself when he's summoned, along with his memories of whatever world he isn't on - this is done in order to avoid confusing him.
- OBJECT ORIGIN DETECTION allows him to discern the origins of an object by touching it. This takes a few minutes and requires concentration.
- INDEPENDENT ACTION permits him to exist with no Master. Though originally considered part of his Archer container, this skill remains active even when he isn't in a class container at all, thus indicating that it is likely just a function of his will/ego, as above.
❋NOBLE PHANTASMS Noble Phantasms are basically powers, items, etc that represent the Legend of the Heroic Spirit. In Gilgamesh's case, he has three (or two? Hard to tell) specific personal weapons that are his personal Noble Phantasms. And then he has a Noble Phantasm that represents his existence as the source of all heroes and legends, the adjudicator of mankind, and the keeper of all human knowledge and innovation.
- GATE OF BABYLON: THE KING'S TREASURE is Gilgamesh's signature power. is the ability to access his personal vault of Stuff and draw things out of it. Most of the time this means he summons a bunch of magical weapons and tosses them at people (he can control their trajectory without touching them) in groups of However Many He Feels Like. But that's not the only use by a long shot as he also has food, drinks, games, vehicles, etc in there. He admits himself that the amount of stuff in there has long since surpassed his personal knowledge of its contents.
Basically, the rule is, Gilgamesh will have a thing in his vault if it fulfills ANY of the following three conditions:
- Gilgamesh personally owned it during his human lifespan.
- It was, or may one day be, created by a human. (This includes, for example, faster than light vehicles which have yet to be invented.)
- It's a Noble Phantasm. In this case, he'll have their prototype. At times, this is basically the same as the actual item possessed by the Heroic Spirit normally associated with it. At other times, it's similar in appearance but stronger. It may also be a different object entirely, in the case of a weapon (such as Caliburn) whose legend is derived from another legend. In any case, if the item is not exactly the same, it is always notably stronger than the derivative. There are a scarce few Noble Phantasms he does not have for various reasons (e.g. Excalibur, which is a holy object and created by World), but this is still close enough to true.
Gilgamesh is not actively aware of everything he has, but if an item is present, he can locate it by mentally searching the vault. There's an endless list of things known to be in there, but most notably this includes a TON of magical items with disparate abilities ranging from potions of youth to the world-breaker sword, Ea (which basically creates and uncreates worlds). A mostly reasonable information rundown on Gate of Babylon can be found here, but it's honestly not possible to list everything in it. Anything he draws out respawns inside the vault when he's done with it in the physical world. Regarding the contents, Kinoko Nasu has said "anything can be found in there."
- THE KING'S ARMOR is an immensely powerful protective item that can appear as a full suit of golden plate mail or an ancient partial armor. When wearing it, Gilgamesh is more or less immune to magic and can easily tank a fortress-destroying energy bolt without flinching taking any damage.
- EA also known as the Sword of Rupture, or the Star of Creation That Split Heaven and Earth. It's power output is roughly equivalent to, or slightly higher than, Excalibur when used normally. It can be used to activate Enuma Elish which, at full power, can rend dimensions to pieces and destroy and create worlds. Most of the time he uses it at a much lower level, however. At that point, it's basically an extremely powerful magical sword that fires energy bolts and can cause massive property damage.
- ENKIDU also known as the Chain of Heaven or the Chain that Binds the Gods. When used to bind non-divine beings, this is simply an unusually strong chain. However, when used on divine beings (gods, angels, demigods, etc), it increases in strength in proportion to the strength of their divinity and seals their powers, thus rendering them helpless. In this way, Gilgamesh can incapacitate even gods.
 abilities.
❋WEAPON USAGE In his non-Archer form, Giglamesh is an excellent melee warrior - an expert in any weapon, you could say, though a master of none in particular. According to his Epic, he appears to favor axes and daggers in particular. In his Archer container, he is less skilled - actually quite mediocre -- in hand-to-hand though better with long range weapons since he is indeed an Archer. In both forms, he prefers hands off battle via Gate of Babylon whenever possible.
❋CHARISMA His charisma is so great it is compared to a magic spell. It's not actually a magic spell, though, he's just very magnetic. Charisma two ranks below his is considered sufficient to be a great leader of nations.
❋HIGHER VISION Gilgamesh is said to have a vision exceeding that of the Gods themselves as a result of his divine and mortal experiences and blood. He's an extraordinary strategic mind and is able to step back from a situation sufficiently to see it as though from "above", like a chessboard, thus allowing him to choose an ideal path. (...at least in theory).
❋WILD ANIMAL TRAINING Well, lions anyway. Gilgamesh fucking loves lions, he cuddles with them all the time. Don't talk bad about big cats around him. Just don't do it.
