Quotes: Core Canon (Zero, Stay Night, Hollow Ataraxia)❋
Core Canon (Zero/N/HA)
Gilgamesh: Little worm crawling on the ground, who gave you permission to come here? ...you are not worthy to gaze upon me. A worm should just continue staring at the ground as it dies.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gilgamesh: For the time being, I shall amuse myself with some exploring. rthis age is rather fascinating to me.
Tokiomi: Is the modern world to your liking?
Gilgamesh: It's unspeakably ugly. However, there are ways I can enjoy it.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gilgamesh: If nothing in this world is worthy of my adoration, you will pay dearly for summoning me and wasting my time.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gilgamesh: Everything of value in this world belongs to me. No matter how precious a treasure this Grail of yours may be, I won't let some mongrel have it without my permission.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gilgamesh: In a single night, two insolent knaves dare to call themselves kings in my presence. I am the one and only hero and king in this heaven and earth. The rest of you are merely a bunch of mongrels.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gilgamesh: Are you questioning me, mongrel? Me, the King? If you cannot discern my identity even in the presence of my glory, then your ignorance shall result in your death!
❋ ❋ ❋
Gilgamesh: Who gave you permission to gaze upon me, rabid dog?
❋ ❋ ❋
Gilgamesh: May your scattered remnants entertain me, mongrel.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gilgamesh: Mongrels! See that you've culled your numbers by our next meeting. Only a true hero is worthy of looking upon me.
Gilgamesh: Tokiomi invited me to this world and maintains my form here. His greeting was also worthy of my status, so I had to respond. But I never thought he'd be this boring.
Gilgamesh: Reaching the Swirl of the Root? What a pointless sounding plan.
Kirei: The desire to access the Root is unique to Magi. It's not for outsiders to comment on. The path to the Root can be said to be an escape to the Exterior of this World. Those of us interested only in the interior of this world can only understand it as a "pointless sounding plan."
Gilgamesh: I see. It's true that I'm satisfied from simply admiring my garden, the entire universe. I have no interest in realms outside my dominion. This Root thing doesn't concern me in the least.
Kirei: Perhaps. But the Grail isn't a device specifically designed to seek the Root. When we say that it is omnipotent, we mean that it has limitless potential to alter even the World Interior.
Gilgamesh: So you're saying the other Masters have motives other than Tokiomi's for seeking the Grail?
Kirei: Tokiomi is an archtypal Mage as well as ultra-Right wing. Others generally seek benefits concerned witht he World Interior, the present world. Prestige. Desire. Power.
Gilgamesh: That suits me fine. I love all of those things.
Kirei: You are a king that rules over the vulgar, Gilgamesh.
❋ ❋ ❋
Kirei: I have no ideals or desires, so why was I chosen to fight in this war?
Gilgamesh: No ideals or desires? Then why not simply wish for pleasure?
Kirei: Ridiculous. Pleasure? You'd ask me to commit something so sinful and corrupt?
Gilgamesh: Sinful? Corrupt? I don't understand your logic. Why must pleasure and sin be connected? Pleasure through evil means could be a sin. But people also derive pleasure from good deeds. What kind of philosophy calls pleasure itself a sin?
Kirei: Pleasure is another thing that I lack. I seek for it, but I cannot find it.
Gilgamesh: Kotomine Kirei. I suddenly find you very interesting.
You see, pleasure is basically a form of the soul. The question isn't whether it exists, but whether you know it or not. Kirei. You don't yet see what form your taken. That's basically what's happening when you claim that you lack pleasure.
Kirei: So, some Servant seeks to lecture me?
Gilgamesh: Don't get cocky, mongrel. These are the words of a king who has tasted all the pleasures and luxuries of this world. You should just listen to me.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gilgamesh: I enjoy watching what humans do. One or two of them are bound to be interesting. More interesting than Tokiomi at the very least.
That's more than enough nonsense... mongrel.
The premise of having to fight for the grail makes no sense to begin with. The Grail already belongs to me. Every single one of the world's treasures trace their origin back to my treasury.
Don't see this with your mongrel standards. The wealth in my treasuy has long since surpassed my own knowledge. But the fact that it is treasure is enough to make it mine. And anyone who would take it for their own is nothing but a brazen thief.
Only my subjects and people are worthy of my compassion. In other words, Rider, if you submit yourself to me... I can let you have a drinking cup or two anytime.
You break the law and I punish you. There is no room for discussion.
She calls herself a king and is praised by everyone as such. Yet she says she laments it? How can I possibly keep a straight face?
Well, it's just that your anguished face was quite the sight to behold. It's just like the face of a virgin deflowered in bed. Exactly what I like.
You needn't listen to him, Saber. You are correct. Follow the path you believe in. The agony and conflict you wallow in as you bear the burden of a kingship too heavy for anyone... it's really quite pleasurable to see. Keep at it, King of Knights. You might actually prove worthy of even more of my love.

Gil: If I can't find it, maybe that means I should just give up. In my experience, whenever there was something really hard to find, nothing good has ever come from it.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: Hi, nice to meet you. As I thought, you're an honest person, Onii-san. Please do your best with that honesty from here on, as well.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: It's still too soon for you to come here. Hmm... when you know my name, and you find something that seems to be important, something good may happen if you go to the back of the temple at this same time.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: Oh, you don't remember me? Hmmm, I see... Onii-san, you seem to be the dense sort. I guess it'll take you a bit. But we have already met each other many times. Well, I might have been wearing something a bit different, though.
Shirou: You were wearing different clothing?
Gil: Hmm. Not really clothing, but appearance? Well, when I say back then, it really does feel like I'm talking about someone else. We are the same person, but there isn't much of a link, it seems.
... I'll give you a hint. I am the person Onii-san probably hates the most. That should narrow it down quite a bit, right? Onii-san, you have just as many people that you don't get along with as anyone else, but there shouldn't be many people that you hate.
Shirou: Um. Did he have a younger brother by any chance
Gil: Too bad, but I have no blood relatives. I've always wanted to have a sibling or a companion, though. Ah, but please don't worry. Saber-san isn't my type yet. Well, if I lose to her something unexpected may still happen, but for now I'm not pursuing her.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: I'm him. It was along the lines of: "What an infantile mess. I refuse to put up with this nonsense." So it looks like I drank a youth potion. I really don't get myself.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: Onii-san, I know what you're thinking. I did ask a lot of other people and got the same reaction. I know it's my fault. ...why do I end up doing things that make people hate me? Hard to answer, even though it's about myself. No... because it is about my own self.
See you later, Onii-san. Oh, you shouldn't do anything dangerous by yourself. Hmm... I think it would be a good idea to do a lot of other stuff, first. If you do that, I'll be able to go back to my old self, too.
Shirou: Wai-- wait, what do you mean?
Gil: I'm sorry, I can't tell you. I was told by my Master that I couldn't tell you. Remember? I have a past record. I was told to stay put until Lancer died, but there I went, off to see Saber-san. ...why do I have to end up doing that kind of stuff...?
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: Yes, that's right. My Master is Kotomine. But Kotomine is certainly dead. He's already gone. Because of that, Kotomine Kirei has nothing to do with this situation. You should just think of me as part of the peanut gallery. Yep, I really have nothing to do with this incident.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: It's a little abnormal for a training maniac like Onii-san to not practice just because there's no good opportunity.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: People can work with most of what they know, but they can't venture into the unknown. They don't know how, that's why they can't do it.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: (when told he shouldn't get involved in something) I really shouldn't. I'll get scolded, definitely. She's scary when she's mad. Before, she used to insult me with her sarcasm, but now she'd plain ignore me. It's pretty tough. Porca miseria. ...it's slang. She wasn't brought up very well.
❋ ❋ ❋
Cu: You looking all cute and innocent ain't right to begin with. It's like a different person. Way too much of a mystery, that growth process thing. All blank after the monkey stage.
Gil: Oh dear, I'm not well-liked, am I? I'd sure like to get along with my comrades under the same Master. Though, well, now that I think about it, I've certainly done a lot of things that could lead to misunderstandings. Can't be helped, I guess.
Cu: Ain't no misunderstanding. You were a full-on tyrant. That won't change no matter how you look at it. Gotta kick your butt once and fix that at the root. Ain't no other remedy.
Gil: That's right. Why did I have to turn into such a person? But the future can't be changed. Ahh, who'd have thought knowing the future could be so depressing?
Shirou: I get it. I know that feeling, just a little.
Gil: Really? That's great. Then I can be good friends with you, Onii-san. I'm so happy, I finally met someone who would be friends with me even after I become an adult!
Shirou: Ah, sorry, that's impossible. I can't get along with the grown up you. Fundamentally incompatible with my tastes, you could say.
Gil: Is that so... what a shock, even Onii-san says he prefers the little me with a serious face. The grown up me isn't to his tastes, what a biased guy.
❋ ❋ ❋
Shirou: My tastes are perfectly decent! Don't put me together with that pervert blond!
Gil: That's rude. That's the last thing I want to hear from you, Onii-san.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: A competition of pure strength is not smart. If at all possible, I would like to win without fighting.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: Being King means you've got to consider the point of view of everyone else, in addition to your own.
Cu: ...hey lad. Got nothing to do with it, but I know this one total prick of a king. Looks down on everyone but himself, calls them "mongrels," claims that everyone in the world gotta serve him, and hates the guts of those that actually do like he says. Sound familiar?
Sure does. Doesn't listen to what others tell him, thinks he can get anything with money and totally forgets the crap he did in one day flat. Has terrible manners with women, gets rejected every other day yet keeps coming back without ever learning anything. It's not "Do you like me?" with him, it's more like, "I have chosen you and that's all that matters!" Stuff like that.
Yeah yeah. Got no clue about repaying favors, either. It ain't like he defaults on hi debts, it's more like he chalks it up to a tribute he's entitled to. And what's more... he won't lift a finger for someone else's sake. A king of NEETs. Collects from those who work hard, and then just puts his feet up.
That's right. A real pain. Got nothing to do with anything, but what do you think of that guy?
Gil: Wow, what a terrible person. Do such people really exist?!
[Yep, and it's you.]
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: Ah... no, I'm the one who should apologize. That was quite rude of me. A guy who would do something so rude as asking a woman her age has no right to call himself a man.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: They do listen to you, Yukika. You don't need to worry about them. Your brothers would never do anything to make your sad, even if I'm not there to watch them. ...well, it would indeed be a problem if they were trying to upset you on purpose. In that case, I would be sure to scold them for you.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: Good grief, me, a sex fiend? You're the last person I want to hear that from, Onii-san.
Shirou: Am I wrong? I saw you putting the moves on Saegusa. I don't know what game you think this is, but she's not the kind of person you're allowed to play around with so casually.
Gil: How rude. I truly like Yukika.
Shirou: Liar! No wait... doubting your sincerity there would be pretty rude. So are you, like, serious about her?
Gil: I spoke the truth. A woman like Yukika would be an ideal life partner.
Shirou: W-well then, I'm sorry for thinking you were playing around with her feelings. Still, this sure is a strange turn of events, what happened to you being into Saber?
Gil: Saber-san is the sun. I have no interest in that. Perhaps she might make a useful vassal, but she is unsuitable to be a lifelong partner. [...] It's not that Yukika is supportive, rather she's someone who has to be taken under one's wing. A wildflower is more precious to me than the most vibrant rose. To see how much one can shelter a simple flower, leaving it just as it is, that to me is what being supportive means for a man.
The only type of person one can rule over is one who wishes to be ruled over. Unfortunately, it seems that I forget this once I grow older. If I had a choice, I would have liked to become a good leader. Why is it that others attempt to rule through fear when the correct path is so simply trod?
[Wow. For the good of all the people in the world, this King should stay as a child. Definitely. No doubt about it.]
Shirou: Ah. Wait then, what happens if the person you'd cared for doesn't turn out the way you'd like?
Gil: If that happened, I would simply discard them. It would mean we were not fated to be together in that way.
[I take it back, this guy hasn't changed one bit. That callousness is a part of his very nature that nobody can ever hope to change.]
Shirou: Huh. So if Saegusa were to become more like Tohsaka you'd grow to love her less?
Gil: My love would not lessen. It is simply that it would grow no more. It would become something eternal and unchanging. It will not flourish, but neither will it die. Love, once it has appeared, can never be erased. It's not true what they say about excessive love becoming hatred. It's simply that newly born hatred has surpassed the love cultivated up until that point.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: No matter how far the man strays from human morality, problematically he still has love. And this appears familiar to people, so in the end he is hated as a human. If only he had just been entirely inhuman to begin with, he would have been designated a god instead.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: I beg your pardon? I was sure you saw me earlier, but might you have failed to notice me? In that case, I apologize. I suppose salutations are overdue.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: Saber-san isn't too bad, I must admit. I have no interest in snakes, nor do I care for artificial flowers. As for the magus sisters, well, perhaps if I have free time.
❋ ❋ ❋
Gil: Stop. Can't you be a little quieter at this hour? Kids need their sleep and they won't be getting any with all this racket.
[An impossible force exists here. Entering Shinto, the corpses head towards the tower. They couldn't possibly know. If the creatures entering the city are like a big wave, then he is like a typhoon. An incarnation of savagery itself, it would blow away anyone of a lesser will.
The boy is enveloped in a peculiar scent. Silver ash is at his feet. The swirling mist enshrouds the young man and the enemy like smoke.]
Gil: Hey, I won't ask who you are or where you came from, but good evening. Seeing such numbers come out at this hour, i wonder if there's a big festival or something going on.
[The boy stays exceedingly calm. In spite of the outpouring of creatures from the underworld rushing towards him, there is not a trace of timidity in him. Instead, his innocent visage, resembling that of an angel...]
Gil: Well, I'm not interested in whatever's going on. ...So, you guys are all leaders? Yeah... you all look as if mass-produced from the same cast. Hmm, this is difficult. Leaders are supposed to take responsibility for these things, right? Meaning the whole lot of you need to be fired for the failures of the entire swarm.
[What sort of a management overhaul would that be? Having nothing but a simple objective in mind, the creatures are rapidly unifying around him.
First and foremost, for their one common goal. Their instincts tell them that in order to take over the tower up ahead, they need to concentrate their violence here.
And second--]
Gil: If all of you are leaders, then it can't be helped. It's a pain, but I shall hold every one of you responsible.
[--for the first time since their inception, they begin to feel terrified of the enemy in front of them.
The corpses stir amongst themselves. Yet more of them gather around the boy, encircling him every so tightly. The central park is filled to the brim with corpses. The wasteland which was the last battleground of the Heaven's Feel ten years ago turns into hell once more.]
Gil: Good grief -- you guys are no army, you're a disease. Multiplying endlessly even if just one of you remains, aren't you what I abhor the most?
[The swarm accumulates into a mountain, striving to crush the boy from all sides. Once they swallow him, that will be the end of it. [...] Still, if it's an invasion, shouldn't occupying the tower be their final goal? ...shouldn't they be heading straight towards the tower, and not...?]
Gil: You don't know what you came here for? Uh huh, hardly surprising for a bunch of worms. You sure get lured out easily by the mere smell of some incense. It's way too much of a luxury for the likes of you, but since we're putting all manners aside tonight, there's no need for me to hold back. ...yeah. Seeing as you lot are singing praises to Hell, already...
[A wicked grin spreads across his face. Elation and derision mix together. Looking at the mountain of corpses towering ahead of him.. He passes judgment unto them, there and then.
...
It is all to weed out the sin. A storm even greater than the dark invaders, the Golden Annihilator has descended!]
Gilgamesh: I am opening the path to the underworld. Scream all you want, people of the dead. Fear not, I won't keep you bored. This whim of mine is a once in a lifetime occasion, after all. I shall not skimp or hold back my treasures. Wager your lives and endure until the break of dawn.
